Following his graduation from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor and service in the U.S. Army Counter Intelligence Corps in Germany, Richard A. Underwood worked for five years at General Motors Corporation. After his novel was published by Holt, Rinehart, and Winston in 1963, Underwood and his wife lived in Europe.

He returned to the University of Michigan for his doctorate in English literature and began university teaching in South Carolina in 1970. His noted Shakespeare scholarship resulted in three books published. Underwood was also a professional jazz piano musician. He lives with his wife of forty-seven years on a lake in South Carolina. Both are retired from long university careers.
